Gene has been involved in the western industry since 1977 when he commenced showing junior youth with the Appaloosa and Palouse ponies.
Having won numerous national and state titles in both youth and open, Gene took a break from the horses until returning in the mid 90’s.

After purchasing the AQHA and Youth Champion mare Walla On-Top, Gene also breed a leased mare to Zips Larry Two. The resulting filly, Unzip Me, went onto multiple futurity champions. During this time, Gene was producing much sought after custom western saddles.

After numerous requests, Gene opened his doors to the public in 2000 as a professional trainer. Throughout the past decade Gene has trained and been successful with some extraordinary horses. He purchased from America and imported on behalf of client’s Pawsitively Blazing, Pass Judgement and Only Zippin. All of which have won major futurities with Gene on board. A few of the other great horses he has been privileged to train and show include, Designer Zipper, Bite Me, Hez da One, Tall Dark N Okay, ZZ Top, Winderadeen Bar None and Caught you Lookin to name a few.

In 1998, Gene was invited to America after meeting the well credentialed trainer Jody Galyean. It was during his stay that he spent time him Jody’s brother Gil in Oklahoma. Over the past decade Gene has made numerous trips to Gil’s ranch where he has worked. During his time at the ranch Gene has had the opportunity to ride and train some of the quarter horse worlds great horses under Gil’s guidance. These include One Hot Krymsun, Radical Revolution, Investing Wisely, Irish Invitation, Leaguers Grand Slam, Classy Pine and Hot N Blazing.

Gene, Trace and family moved to their property in 2011 following completion of their dream home. The new property at Bunyip is situated 10 minutes from the Tonimbuk equestrian centre in the heart of the equine precinct. The property boasts 33 acres, with post and rail fencing, improved pastures and 3m stand offs between paddocks. The new barn has now been completed and contains 6 large stables, with office and undercover wash area. Four undercover yards will soon to be completed. A new arena and round pen complete the training facility.

Gene will continue to show, train and breed with an emphasis on western pleasure and HUS horses. Whilst Trace has shown previously, winning the amateur WP showcase onboard Unzip Me, 2 daughters with several other non-horse interests and a full time job as a nurse keep her extremely busy.
